Unlocking your version 1.0.2 iPhone (the easy way)

October 18, 2007 – 3:01 am

There is a possibility of you screwing up your phone while doing this. If you are extremely careful and follow the instructions you will be fine. Okay? Don’t blame me, however, if you screw something up!

This walkthrough is assuming that you are using firmware 1.0.2 - Click here for instructions on how to check
You are going to need FOUR files for this to work. All but iTunes are hosted on this same site - no rapidshare bullshit.

You’ll need:

iTunes 7.4.2
1.0.2 Firmware (Save this file to “C:\Documents and Settings\%USER_NAME%\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates” - where you see %USER_NAME% - select YOUR username.
ibrickr_v08.zip
neccessary_files.zip

(And winzip, to extract them. If you don’t already have it)

Now, get your phone out of the box turn it on and plug it in to your computer. It should be at the “Activate iPhone - connect to iTunes” screen. Ignore that.

Only do the following step if your firmware is OLDER than 1.0.2

Hold down the power button and slide the power slider to shut your phone off. After that, power the iPhone back on and as soon as you see the grey apple logo, hold down the home button and the power button until you arrive at this screen (which should take about 20 seconds)
please connect to iTunes

iTunes will then prompt you telling you that your phone needs to be restored, HOLD THE SHIFT KEY WHEN YOU CLICK THE RESTORE BUTTON this will allow you to select the firmware you would like to use, select the file “iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw” this will get you to version 1.0.2 firmware.

Next, open up iBrickr, which is available for download above. iBrickr will look like this when you first open it:
iBrickr main window.

Click on the “Free my iPhone!” button. After doing that, iBrickr will tell you that you need to restart your iPhone in “Restore Mode”. That is simply done by shutting your phone off, turning it back on and as SOON as you see the grey apple logo, pressing and holding the power and home key for approximately 20 seconds. It takes a while, so don’t get frustrated if you think you’re doing it wrong.
ibrickr telling you to restart in restore mode

After you do this, iTunes will prompt you telling you that you need to restore you iPhone, ignore all of these messages and focus your attention on iBrickr, which will display a new message, saying that it is modifying your iPhone. Yay! We’re getting close to having an unlocked iPhone! :)
iBrickr telling you to ignore anything that iTunes says

Just let iBrickr do it’s thing with your iPhone, it will take 3-4 minutes. At this time, go take a piss or get a drink or something. It really is like watching paint dry.

iBrickr will now come back and say “Success!” - which means that we’re another step closer to home. Click the button that says “Sweet!” and then close iBrickr (it tends to hang up at this point, don’t ask me why because I don’t know)
iBrickr success window. Click Sweet here

Open iBrickr again and you will now see the “Ready to Customize” screen. There will be four options:

  • Ringtones
  • Sounds
  • Application
  • Files

The one we want is going to be “Files”
iBrickr asking what you would like to upload

On the iPhone on your computer monitor, select “usr” and then “libexec” and upload the lockdownd file (which was included in the “necessary_files.zip” file) After it finishes uploading to your iPhone, power the phone off and back on. There will no longer be a message telling you that you need to activate your iPhone! See?! I told you this was easy!

iBrickr - telling you to install the PXL daemon
Now, go back into iBrickr after your phone has completely restarted and now click “Applications”. At the next screen it will tell you that you need to install the PXL daemon on your phone before you can really do a whole lot. So click the Install PXL button and it will yet again ask you to restart your phone. Restart your phone again and then when you are back up and running, go back into the iBrickr window and click “Continue” - after you do that, you will need to restart ONE LAST TIME. :) Once again, go back into the iBrickr window after the restart and click “Check for PXL” iBrickr checking for PXL on your iPhone - unlock-it.org

After that it will go into the “Application Manager” screen. There, you will want to click “Install from PXL file” and then select the AnySIM 1.01.pxl” file. It will install the application and restart your iPhone. You will just need to do the “slide to unlock” and you’re back at the home screen - and at this point you will notice that there is a new icon on there. Before we can do anything with it, you need to go into Settings, General, Auto-lock, and disable that option. Auto-Lock cannot be enabled while running AnySIM!

Now, click the home button and get back to the main screen and click on “AnySIM” (the icon that looks like a red dial) simply “slide to unlock” and scroll down to the red button, click it and then let AnySIM go to work! It will take anywhere from 5-20 minutes to do its thing, but

just let it work. Do not try and do anything else on the phone!

Now, when it finishes, it will probably give you some sort of error message. Click okay to any messages that it prompts you with and then power down your phone. Once your phone is shut off, you’ll need to remove the SIM card (which is located between the power button and the headphone jack on the top of the phone). The easiest way I have found is by using a thumb tack. Simply insert the thumb tack into the hole and apply a slight bit of pressure to either side and gently pull out, releasing the clip and sim card!

Next, insert your SIM card and turn the phone back on. You should now be able to use your iPhone on any other GSM network!

I will write up a step-by-step guide on how to get youtube working on your iPhone, as well as setting up GMail for use with your phone.

  9. Just wanted to check something, I have an iPhone w/ FW 1.0.0 and unlocked using anysim. Can I update in itunes to 1.0.2 without locking it again? If it gets locked, can i use ibrick and load again the anysim to unlock/activate the phone? Could I just go ahead and virginize the phone to 1.0.2 (using the very complicated instructions going around) from the current 1.0.0 and just go ahead and update to 1.1.1?

    Thanks admin!

Are you sure that you have 1.0.0 firmware currently? When I unlocked mine, it would not allow me to continue in iBrickr without updating the phone to 1.0.2.

Double check your firmware version first..

  13. @Joel

I’m not sure what you mean about the file not working.

I just double check to make sure the file was still on the server and it is. What problem are you having?

  15. Hi, thanks for putting this guide together, much apriciated. Unfrotunately I am also unable to extract the necessary files, down load is good, but winzip 11 complains: “Cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive” Whatever unzip winxp used before I got winzip was also giving a similar complaint - is there a different unzip I should use, if so a link would be greatly appreciated? FYI zip file is 736KB

  16. couple more observations - firmware is good, I used it to restore from its vergin unactivated state wit 1.0.2 to the above 1.0.2 and it took its time and looked like it worked well. ibriker also has the same zip file issue, no idea how to get rid of the unzip error - many thanks for any help want to activate the phone for my bro who is posted in Africa as apple will likely not go there in the near future :(
